Key Characteristics of Sea-Beans:
- The Origin: These are hard, woody seeds produced by tropical vines and trees in regions like Central and South America. They fall into local rivers, float out into the ocean, and can drift for thousands of miles across global currents before washing ashore on distant beaches.
- The “Eye” Band: These seeds are famous for their dark, prominent band running along the edge (the hilum), making them look like miniature hamburgers—hence the common nickname. [1]
- Texture & Use: Because their outer shells are incredibly durable, smooth, and naturally buoyant, they are highly prized for tumbling, polishing, and crafting into jewelry, lucky charms, or keychains.
Mineral Possibilities
If you are certain the material is a heavy, cold-to-the-touch mineral stone rather than a organic seed, it is likely a polished gemstone polished to mimic organic shapes. At least three distinct possibilities include:
- Tiger’s Eye (Matrix): A chatoyant gemstone featuring parallel, golden-brown and dark brown bands that shimmer when moved in the light. [1]
- Brown Jasper: An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz that naturally forms in rich earth tones with sweeping band patterns. [1]
- Petrified Wood: Fossilized remains of ancient terrestrial vegetation where the organic wood material has been entirely replaced by minerals over millions of years, perfectly preserving the original wood grain lines.
